Total area of Jaisalmer fort is around 5 sq. km. so you need one full day to cover fort and after that day for camel safari, so I think minimum 2 days are required.
I have been there twice and have stayed there for 10-12 days in the month of October, it's totally safe and if you are going to Jaisalmer then do not forget to go for a camel safari to see sand dunes and sunset at Thar Desert.
I agree that we can get better deals on some websites but I always prefer to see my bed, washroom and location of the hotel before paying the amount. I always prefer to keep my options open ;)
As you said that you are already using Vodafone in your home country so take my advice and stick to Vodafone in India too. Just go to any Vodafone store and get a prepaid connection, it will not take more than an hour or two to get the services activated.
