When I was in India, I went on sightseeing traveling groups through their nature and city. It was a great experience, you just have to find them. Start with a search online.
I believe you can rent a home while in India but I'd advise against it. I would stick with a mainstream hotel company as it's safer, but can be more expensive.
Make sure the restaurant you're eating at is clean and be sure to go to your local doctors and ask what shots you should take before you travel to India.
Honestly just ignore them and don't give them a dime! You aren't required to and I don't think you should but that's my opinion. If you want to put your money to good use donate to a charity of your choice.
If you're staying for around 6 months you'll have to pay that but I mean if you're there for that long just make sure it's worth it. The longest I've ever traveled to India for was for 3 weeks.
I would probably call Visa or the border office because they obviously can't get the payment to go through successfully. Maybe it has to do with the country difference, but definitely call if it doesn't work later on.
It can really differ between bank to bank and I would just recommend for you to contact your bank. For me, there isn't any fees with international purchases. Some banks may lock your account because it's from a foreign country, but that's fixed with a single phone call.
When I went to India, food was not all spicy like you think it would be. Some foods, yes, are a little hot but it was about half and half. I'm fine with spice though. You should just ask someone at the store or restaurant. Cheers!
I'm not sure the exact shots you would need. You probably should get your hepatitis shots A and B as a general rule of thumb while travelling. When I went to India, that's the only shots I had and I was fine. You should probably consult with your doctor to figure this out.
