Ahmedabad Attraction

I need to travel to Vadodara and Kochi on an official tour later this month. As there is no flight connectivity between Vadodara and Kochi, I will have to go to Ahmedabad to board my flight to Kochi. I will have an entire day to spare in this historic city. So just thought do some local sightseeing within Ahmedabad city limits.

It would be great if someone can guide me about the major tourist attractions at Ahmedabad that can be visited in one day. I may not be able to visit all Ahmedabad attractions in a single day, so please include the must visit places of tourist interest, especially the historical places and heritage sites of Ahmedabad.

Ahmedabad is a large city with so many tourist attractions. It won't be possible for you to cover all within a single day. Anyway, listed below are the most prominent tourist attractions in Ahmedabad which are worth paying a visit to.

1. Sabarmati Ashram (Gandhi Ashram): A place that has huge significance to the freedom movement of India. The Ashram, established by Gandhi ji in 1917, lies by the side of Sabarmati river in a peaceful ambience. 'Hridaya Kunj', a simple cottage where Gandhi ji used to live, is listed as a National Monument under the ASI. There is a museum, Gandhi Memorial Center, which has a great collection of articles from Mahatma Gandhi's life. Don't miss out on the Light-&-Sound spectacle in the evening which displays various incidents from Mahatma Gandhi's life related to India's freedom movement.

2. Kankaria Lake: A man-made wonder constructed during the rulings of Sultan Qutubub-Din in 1451. It is a popular recreational center in Ahmedabad which has a well-maintained park, an aquarium, a boat house, a museum and a mini zoo. There is a small island in the middle of this huge circular-shaped lake. The island has a garden and a palace which was used by the Sultan as his summer residence. The palace is known as Nagina Wadi. Also there is a toy train to take the tourists around the lake.

3. Adlaj Vav: Adlaj Vav is a chiseled stepped well constructed by Queen Rudabai in the year 1499. This five stories well was used to conserving rain water. It is counted among the finest architectural marvels in the state of Gujarat.

4. Bhadra Fort-cum-Palace: This palace-cum-fort structure was constructed in the 14th century. This huge fortified enclosure has as many as 10 entrances. There is a royal palace, temple and garden inside the fort complex.

5. Rani Roopmati Mosque: Constructed between 1430-1440 AD, this architectural marvel is known for its richly carved minarets and perforated stone works on the exterior wall. Popularly known as Masjid-e-Nagina, it is one of the most sought-after historical attractions in Ahmedabad.

If you still have time in hand after covering all the five attractions mentioned above, then you can also visit Hussain Doshi's Gufa, Jhulta Minar, and Sardar Patel National Museum. Another interesting place to visit in Ahmedabad is the Auto World car museum which has a vintage collection of heritage vehicles. If you are interested in visiting religious places, then you should include Swaminarayan Temple, Hutheesing Jain Temple and Ahmedabad Jama Masjid to your list of places to see in Ahmedabad.

You've already got a great list there. Here's some other places you can visit in Ahmedabad:

• The Science City. Located at SP Ring Rd,Hebatpur, Ahmedabad, Gujarat 380060, India. There's an area of over 100 hectares to be explored. There's creative exhibits, virtual reality activity centres and even live demonstrations. There's also a 3D IMax Theatre that visitors enjoy. Apart from these, there's also a musical fountain show during the evening. For the adventurous ones, try the simulation rides they offer. Entry fee is Rs. 20 for adults and Rs. 10 for children. There's fees for the IMax Theatre and rides though.

• Sidi Sayed Mosque. It consists of 10 circular "Jali" windows which is very intricately designed. This is the main feature of the mosque that sets it apart from other mosques. Tourists all over the world visit this mosque as well.

• Jhulta Minara. Also known as the "Shaking Minaret," that is if one of the minarets is shaken, the other one shakes as well. Until now, the mechanism to this is still not known.

• Teen Darwaja. Built by the town's founder, Sultan Ahmed Shah. It is a gateway consisting of three entrances.

• Calico Textile Museum. There's a collection of textiles dating as far back as the 17th century. It is located in the Sarabhai Foundation, in the Shahibag premises.

• Dada Harir's Vav and Mosque. It was built around 500 years ago as a source of water for the people of the town. It is a cascade of stairwells and columns going underground. It also has intricate carvings of Sanskrit and Arabic Script.

• Vechaar Utensils Museum. This museum has bronze, copper, brass and many more types of utensils dating for a thousand years old even.

• New Lucky Restaurant in Lal Darwaza. It is built on a graveyard and you can even see graves in the restaurant itself. Certainly a must to experience eating in this restaurant along with the dead!

• Law Garden Night Market. There's handicrafts and clothes here. If shopping is in your itinerary, then you better visit this place as well.
