Famous Street Food in Delhi

My friend and I would be sent to Delhi for work by our company at different times of the year. Both of us just love street food, and as we would be in the capital, we wanted to know about the specialities. Our weekends would be free where we would go around Delhi seeing things and of course eating.

We both would like to know the different types of famous street food in Delhi, and where we would get that famous street food from if there is a special place.

Perhaps the most well-known street food joint would in the Old Delhi, just nearby Chandni Chowk. It can get chaotic though so you better pack your street smarts or you might get lost in the chaos. Otherwise, here's a little list of the best street foods in Delhi and where you can find them:

1. Paratha - Also known by the name Parantha or Paranthe, this is a flatbread that is quite famous in Delhi. You can find various versions: Plain Paratha, Aloo Cheese Paratha, Chicken Paratha, Tandoori Paratha and many more.

• Paranthe Wali Gali - You can find the most delicious Parathas in Paranthe Wali Gali specifically in Pt. Gaya Prasad Shiv Charan Paranthe Wale and Pt.Kanhaiyalal & Durga Prasad Paranthe Wale. This is located in: Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. Try out the Gobi Parathas and Matar Parathas in here.

• Mooljand Parathewala - Another food joint making a name for itself in the world of Parathas. There address is: Lajpat Nagar I, Ring Road, New Delhi. Their Aloo Paratha is probably one of their best-sellers.

2. Chole Bhature - This is street food combination of a bread named Bhatoora and spicy chick peas called Chana Masala. But in Delhi, the Bhatoora is extra fluffy and the Chana Masala is extra rich.

• Chache Di Hatti - You can find this in D-33, Kamla Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110007. They are probably one of the most famous food joints when it comes to Chole Bhature. Prepare to wait in queue to have a taste of their amazing version.

• Giani’s Di Hatti - You can find this in Church Mission Road, Khari Baoli, Chandni Chowk, New Delhi, North Delhi, New Delhi, Delhi 110006. Also serves yummy-tasting Chole Bhatures.

3. Gol Gappe - You might recognise this by other names: Phuchka, Panipuri or Pakodi. In Delhi, you'd find their Gol Gappe have different variations.

• Atul Chaat - You can find this in: H-44, Main Market, Rajouri Garden, New Delhi. Again, there's always a huge line here because of their delectable Chaats and Gol Gappes.

4. Kachori - For the spicy food lovers out there, this one's for you. Kachoris in Delhi are known for their spiciness which can certainly excite foodies.

• Jung Bahadur Kachori Wala. This is located in: 1104, Maliwara, Jogiwari, Gali Paranthe Wali, Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi. This has been around since the 1970's and they serve the best Kachoris in the area.

• Baba Nagpal Corner. You can find this in Lajpat Nagar Market, Vikram Vihar, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi, Delhi 110024. Try out their Onion Kachori!

5. Kebabs. You can also find a wide variety of Kebabs in Delhi: Kakori Kebab and Shami Kebab are must try variants.

• Alka Kori. Their address is: 30, Vasant Place Market, Near Malai Temple, R K Puram, New Delhi. Their Chicken Galauti Kebab is a must have!

6. Jalebi. This sweet, tangy goodness is a must-have in Delhi.

• Jalebi Wala. As the name suggests, this serves the best Jalebi in Delhi. Their address is: 1797 Dariba Corner, Chandni Chowk, Opposite to Church, New Delhi, Delhi 110006. Find out why people flock to this food joint for their crunchy, yummy Jalebis. The serving size is quite big too.

• Bangla Sweet House. Their address is: 115-117, Bangla Sahib Marg, Doctor Lane, Sector 3, Gole Market, New Delhi, Delhi 110001. They have mildly sweet Jalebis although they do have other sweets as well.

Chandni Chowk is one place to be when it comes to Delhi street food. In Chandni Chowk, you can get all kinds of food, which you can typically call street food, most of which have been mentioned in the above post. A few more things I want to add in are Giani falooda which is also available in Chandni Chowk. This is a thick drink made from milk, vermicelli, basil seeds and with some rose syrup, I must warn you that it is very heavy, so make sure you have plenty of space in your stomach.

One of my sisters favourite is ram ladoo's. These are deep fried dumpling made from lentils, which are served with sweet and sour chutney and some radish. These are widely available across Delhi.

India is famous for its street vendors. One of the most popular dishes for Indians and travelers alike is the omelette sandwich. They are basically ambitious anywhere you go. There are obviously many variations and differences between the different vendors but I would basically compare the omelette street vendors to hot dog carts in New York City. It provides a quick, inexpensive, and tasty bite to eat on the go. I would suggest being careful on which one you eat at as you do not want to get sick. It would probably be best to talk to the proprietor of the hotel or hostel you are staying at as they probably know not only where the best stand is but also which ones shouldn't put you through digestive hell. I know many people who have gone to India and come back raving about all the different street food they ate. I hope this helps a bit, have a great trip, cheers!

I did not really know that India had this kind of vendors outthe street, it must be such a nice thing to see a food street at India, I would definitely go to any of those if I ever place a foot in India, I will look up for the typical food and that sort of thing just to get my mouth ready.

Wow, briannagodess! My mouth is just watering at the descriptions of some of these foods. I could really go for some kebabs -- or really any Indian food right now! I hear that the street food in Delhi is phenomenal. What about gulab jammun? Is that something one could get in Delhi? (Or is that even considered street food.) It's pretty much one of my favorite sweets!

And what about Kulfi? There is this place in Chandni Chowk that has the best and natural kulfi.
Kuremal Mohan Lal Kulfi Wale 1165 - 1166 Chandni Chowk is a KULFI specialist having been in this business for well over 100 years.

Not just in sweet shops Gulab Jamun is an easy to make sweet and you will find it also in many kitchens including mine. Ready made ingredients are also available.
