My daughter has gone to Canada for studies, and although we do chat on whatapp, it is not always clear and she doesn't always have internet available on her phone. I would like to know about other options on how to call Canada from India and preferably the cheapest way? I have only heard about services like Skype but not sure if it is suitable to call Canada or what the costs are.
When I'm in India, I use apps like FooCall or Viber to make normal calls back to the UK. Difference to these and WhatsApp is that you can actually call out to normal numbers at low cost. You will require WiFi or Data service to use these apps. However, saying that, cost of calling abroad to countries like Canada or UK in my case from Airtel is can be as competitive as Viber and FooCall, so check cost before you add credit to any apps to see how competitive they are.
I know that Airtel has some ISD plans, as my relatives once used it. Every state plan will differ slightly, but for an example, I will give you the Mumbai ISD plan details. You make a recharge of Rs59 and with that recharge, you can call USA and Canada for 1.5 paisa per second.
That's a great price, you'll have problem finding something better. I'll have to look into to see if there is something similar in Gujarat when I visit India in March.
There are just so many options for making calls to Canada from India. Majority of people use services like Whatsapp and Google Duo, Whatsapp being the most popular one. All it takes is a good internet connection on both ends. In India, it is quite cheap these days, especially with services like Jio who provide affordable and fast 4G connections.
