We are toying with the idea of scheduling our trip to overlap monsoon season so we can experience the rain and green hills. But how do the monsoons affect activity in the Kerala backwaters? Do boat tours go on as usual, or do they get suspended for the season?

    Hello!

Well, Kerala experiences rainfall 9 out of the 12 months of the year. Of course, during monsoon seasons, the rains might be heavier and stronger. The good news is, apart from the beaches, rains affect Kerala positively. There's not much interruption in the activities you can do in Kerala in monsoon season. In fact, Ayurvedic massage and houseboat cruises are recommended during this season.

Monsoon season in Kerala starts from May to November. The Southwest monsoon happens during May to August. In September, there's a break from the rainfall and it usually commences back on October. The Northwest monsoon then occurs from October to November. These rainfalls are usually intermittent and have interludes of sunshine in between.

Houseboat tours continue despite the monsoon season. In fact, the rainy season enhances the overall appeal of Kerala. The foggy hill stations, blue backwaters and the beautiful waterfalls come alive during monsoon season. If your main aim is relaxation and peace, then it's a must to visit Kerala during the monsoon season. Be prepared to get soaked in the rain though. If that doesn't appeal to you, then a trip in monsoon season in Kerala might not be your thing.

Another great advantage of travelling in Kerala during monsoon season? Travel agencies, resorts and hotels offer great discounts for tourists. You can avail of these discounts and save some money.

    I hope this helps!
