We will have some relatives arriving from Agra next week, and they want to go Delhi sightseeing. One of the places they would like to visit is Qutub Minar.

With the traffic and heat, I don't think that driving there would be a good idea, so I think the best bet would be to get the metro, but I need to know which is the nearest metro station to Qutub Minar?

We will be traveling from Moti Nagar.

    What is the Qutub Minar?

The Qutub Minar, a 73-metre high bricked structure, is one of the prime landmarks of Delhi. Originally commissioned to be built by Qutub Al-Din Aibak in 1192, it then marked the victory of the Mamluk dynasty over the Hindu empires during that time. The Qutub Minar was built over many years by succeeding rulers of the Delhi Sultanate, including Shams Ud-Din Iltutmish and Firoz Shah Tughlaq. Aside from its imposing height of five storeys, the Qutub Minar is the perfect example of the earlier architectural style of the Delhi Sultanate, the Muslim rulers who reigned over the pre-colonial Delhi area. It is also worth noting that the Qutub Minar was built using materials from the Hindu and Jain temples of the former capital of the city, which was Quila Rai Pithora. As such, some of the pillars of the minaret still have some carvings depicting themes from Hindu and Jain religions.

Where is the Qutub Minar Located in Delhi?

The Qutub Minar is located in Mehrauli, to the southern side of New Delhi. It is just off the Crescent Road or the Sri Aurobindo Marg, specifically found in the Kalka Das Marg. The nearest landmark is the Ojas Art Gallery, just four minutes of walking away. The nearest restaurants are Cherie (European Cuisine), En (Japanese) and Lavaash By Saby (Armenian). The Qutub Minar is a part of the Qutub Minar Complex which are mostly Muslim structures built during the Delhi Sultanate rule. Thus, you would also find other attractions just within walking distance from it. This includes the Iron Pillar, a 5th century rust-resistant pillar from the Gupta dynasty, the Quwwat-Ul-Islam Mosque, built by the same Qutub Al-Din Aibak together with the minaret, and the Tomb of Iltutmish, tomb of one of the rulers who added into the minaret during its construction phase.
