Every place has something unique to offer. It really comes down to personal preferences while selecting a particular destination from the list of probables.
I have been to both Ooty and Kodaikanal. And from experience, I can list down the following pros and cons -
Ooty Pros:
1. Good road connectivity with all major cities and towns in South India.
2. Loads of public transport options to choose from. Both state transport (Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) and private operators run buses between Ooty and other major places in South India.
3. Many tourist places to visit - Lakes, View Points, Waterfalls, Boat Rides and Horse Riding are a few of the attractions in Ooty.
4. Quite a few places to visit nearby, including Coonoor,
Bandipur,
Glenmorgan and
Kotagiri.
5. The added charm of Nilgiri Heritage Toy Train Ride.
6. Lots of hotels, guest houses and resorts available. Even if you are planning a trip on short notice, you can easily find accommodation in Ooty.
Ooty Cons:
1. Too much commercialized. Nature takes a back-seat.
2. Too many tourists. If you are looking for a relaxing trip away from the mad rush of tourists, Ooty may not be the ideal choice.
3. Hotel prices are on the higher side. Not a great place for budget travellers.
Kodaikanal Pros:
1. Better weather, less pollution.
2. Tourist rush is much lesser than Ooty.
3. Less commercialized and more 'closer to the nature' experience. In terms of greenery, Kodaikanal is far better than Ooty.
4. Hotel tariffs and taxi fares are lower compared to Ooty.
Kodaikanal Cons:
1. There aren't too many places to see in and around Kodaikanal. Tourist activities are limited to boating in the lake or trekking to the view points.
2. Lesser number of hotels and guest houses. Book your stay in advance, if you are planning to visit on weekends.
3. Public transport option is limited. Besides State-run buses, there are only a few private bus operators.
To sum up, there's no clear winner in Ooty vs Kodaikanal battle. Both are really good places to visit down South. For budget travellers, Kodai can be a better choice than Ooty. Lesser rush of tourists is another factor to choose Kodai over Ooty.
You may also consider
Coorg as an alternative. As you will be travelling with friends, Coorg can be a better choice (comapred to Ooty and Kodai) with the prospect of adventure activities.
Munnar can be yet another great alternative if you are interested in natural serenity.
