I would like to know what the road conditions are like from Thal to Munsiyari, as what I have seen and read so far it doesn't seem like a good drive especially if you are driving your own vehicle. I know that it is a one-way lane with no barriers on the edge and more over the road is not smooth.

How safe would you say the road is on a scale from 1-10 1 being the worst?

Should I hire a taxi or would be good enough for me to take my own vehicle which is a Swift?

Lots of people drive to Munsiyari but if your car breaks down then you would be sitting there in the middle of nowhere for a very long time with wild animals doing the rounds at night. I have been to Munsiyari from Delhi twice but second time we took a taxi from Kathgodam.

I would recommend a taxi for purely safety reasons. Roads are not too bad if you ask me, I would rate the road 4 out of 10. There are a few rough patches after Birthi falls and a recent land slide has not been fully repaired so there is a weird diversion. There was a massive landslide a few years ago that destroyed a whole village and it is visible from the road itself, a few hundred people died. They have planted a lot of trees that would help prevent future tragedies like this.

There is also a helicopter service to Munsiyari now which started last year but the prices are on the higher side for my liking.
