Extending India Tourist Visa while in India

I am flying out to New Delhi from London for one month and this would be the last visit on my current tourist visa which I have. There may be plans to extend my stay and there is no problem apart from the fact that if I wanted to stay then my visa would expire and obviously I need a valid visa.

Is it a possible to extend my India visa on my British passport while I am in India?

Where can I get the visa extension from in India?

How long will the procedure take and how long before do I need to apply for the visa?

I am not aware of any options to extend a visitor visa. Those people who over stay have to get an exit permit which carries a little fee so I am guessing thats what you would need.

I don't know about extending a visitor visa, unless you have a valid and good enough reason you should be able to apply for a visa extension, but the best place to ask would be at the nearest FRRO office near you, where visa extensions are given.

You should not wait until your tourist visa expires, just get a new one. There’s no case in traveling if your visa is going to expire and you would need to fly home at the middle of your trip. Just get a new tourist visa before flying.

Extending an India Tourist Visa While in India – Updated 2025

If you're in India on a tourist visa and wish to extend your stay, here’s everything you need to know about the current visa extension process in 2025.

⏳ Can You Extend a Tourist Visa in India?

As per the latest regulations by the Bureau of Immigration (BOI) and FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office):

  • Standard tourist visas (e-Visa & sticker visas) are not extendable in most cases.
  • Some exceptions exist for medical emergencies, unexpected travel restrictions, or humanitarian reasons.
  • If eligible, extensions are granted by the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Office) on a case-by-case basis.

Where & How to Apply for an Extension?

To request an extension, follow these steps:
1️⃣ Apply Online via the e-FRRO portal – No physical visit is required unless asked.
2️⃣ Submit Required Documents, which may include:

  • Application form (filled online).
  • Valid passport (with at least 6 months validity).
  • Current visa copy.
  • Proof of residence in India (hotel booking, rental agreement).
  • Justification letter explaining the reason for extension.
3️⃣ Await FRRO Approval – Processing time varies from a few days to weeks.

Possible Alternatives if Extension is Denied

If your tourist visa cannot be extended, consider these options:
✅ Exit & Reapply – Travel to a nearby country (e.g., Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand) and apply for a fresh e-Visa.
✅ Convert to Another Visa Type – In exceptional cases, FRRO may allow a conversion to a medical or business visa.
✅ Overstay Penalty – Overstaying beyond your visa validity results in fines & possible blacklisting from future India visits.

Important Notes (2025 Update)

  • e-Visas are not extendable or convertible.
  • COVID-era special relaxations no longer apply.
  • Visa-on-arrival extensions are not permitted.
Pro Tip: Always check the latest visa policies on the official Indian Visa Website before making any travel plans!
