Shipping Items From India

On several different threads I've seen people mention shipping their souvenirs and other items home, rather than carrying them in suitcases. I am starting to think this might be a good idea, partly for weight and partly for security reasons.

My question is how? Are there global shipping offices conveniently located in most cities? Can shopkeepers ship items purchased?

There are beautiful handicrafts, monuments which one can buy from India during his or her Journey. Apart from these there are avalability of global shipping offices from where can ship these products to any place. Some shopkeepers do provide shipping facilities while some don't do so.
