Walkie Talkie Use in India

I will be trekking and cycling in the Himachal Pradesh and with me will be husband. Whenever we do go trekking or cycling, we always take along with us our walkie talkies, as in such places there are high chances that mobiles won't work due to poor coverage areas.

We have not been to India before, and we would like to know what the rules and regulations are for walkie talkie use in India. The last thing we want to do is get in trouble for not doing something right, and it would also allow us to know what alternative we would have when we go trekking or cycling if we can't use walkie talkies.

Well, you indeed require a license to operate walkie talkie in India. The following website of Government of India would give you all the rules and regulations about the same.

Not following the rules could land you in serious trouble( in some cases, a jail term of up to 10 years). The kind of equipment needs to be approved as well, including the frequency ranges.

As mentioned above you do require a license for walkie talkies in India and an alternative solution would only be that go in groups instead of on your own. Another suggestion would be to go trekking and cycling in places where there is some population, so in case there are any problems you would be able to spot someone at least every half an hour or so, and always go during the day time to be safe.

Wow... I did not know that. Why on earth would you need a licence to use a walkie talkie? Am I missing something? What does it mean about the frequency range? Does it mean that they might get on the police frequency or something like that, because then I might understand why they would not want just anyone using them. I usually see truckers on tv using them so I just assumed anyone could.
