When is Ganesh Festival in Mumbai?

I want to know when the Ganesh festival is held in Mumbai and the exact date to when the Ganesh idol is taken to the sea. It is an event I have been wanting to see for many years, and now because I will be planning a trip to Mumbai I thought I might as well plan it according to the Ganesh festival

It would be good if you can get together with someone who you know if Mumbai and experience the festival as well, as being a part of the whole festival is a different experience in it self. During the evening you would get to see more and more people, so if you want to avoid too much crowd avoid the evening time and go for the early - late afternoon time to watch the idols being immersed into the sea.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesh, the powerful elephant headed God. It is one of the most popular festivals in India where people from all religions take part whole heartedly. As already pointed out by @Dhruv, you should take extra care to keep you within your groups. Mumbai is one of the most densely populated places in India. It is better to have a route map of the city beforehand.

Nowadays there is strong protest from environmental activists against immersion of Ganesh Idol on grounds of water pollution.I think we should use eco-friendly materials and colors in the making of Ganesh Idol and save water.

I came to know Ganesh when a colleague in a seminar gave me a small likeness of Ganesh, the elephant-like face of a human but is actually a God according to the Nepali guy. He said that Ganesh will bring me luck so I have to take care of that likeness which is made of plaster. It is actually here in front of my computer so I see Ganesh everyday and that may be the reason why I am lucky every day.
